Via the GSC Website-
The top two teams in the 2010 Men’s Basketball Tournament will face off in Sunday’s Championship Game at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, Miss.
No. 1 West seed and defending league champion Arkansas Tech seeks it second straight crown, facing No. 1 East seed Alabama-Huntsville for the second time this season.
The day opened up with a rematch of last year’s Championship Game as Arkansas Tech earned the right to defend its Title via a 57-48 triumph over No. 2 East seed Valdosta State. Both teams struggled from field, but ATU’s defense was the difference, forcing 26 Blazer turnovers. ATU reeled off a 14-2 run en route to an 11-point lead at 11:33 in the first half, but VSU pulled with five points via an 8-2 run. The Wonder Boys built its lead back up to 11 and settled for a 29-20 advantage at the break. Arkansas Tech turned up its defensive pressure in the second half, running out to a 16-point lead at the 12-minute mark and never looked back. Guard Renard Allen came off the bench to net a team-best 10 points and grabbed five rebounds. ATU seeks to become the first back-to-back GSC Champion since Montevallo in 2004-05.
Alabama-Huntsville moved on to the final day for the first time since 2003, defeating arch rival and No. 3 East seed North Alabama for the third time this season, 97-79. UAH trailed 44-43 at halftime, but racked up 54 points in the second half in a contest featuring 19 lead changes. The Chargers were ahead by 10 or more points twice in the first half, but UNA entered the locker room with a one-point advantage thanks to Jacobe Shannon’s free throw with four ticks on the clock. The score was tied, 63-63, with 11:59 left in the game, but Alabama-Huntsville slowly built a 14-point lead at 4:40 and never looked back. Guard Jaime Smith tossed-in a career-high 34 points, behind seven three pointers, while guard Josh Magette added 23 points and eight assists. UAH’s point total was the most in the Tournament since the 2007 Semi-Finals (Montevallo, 98).
Arkansas Tech and Alabama-Huntsville play for the second time this season after ATU earned a 60-47 win at UAH in December. The winner of the GSC Title receives an automatic berth to the 64-team NCAA Tournament. The Championship Games tips off at 2:45 pm (Central) and will be broadcast live on Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast, Cox Sports, WHCQ-TV and MediaCom. Fans who are not in the available markets can also watch the game on the internet at http://www.gulfsouthconference.org/.
