The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced today the 2012 NABC Coaches’ Division II All-District teams and coaches, recognizing the best men’s collegiate basketball student-athletes and coaches in the division. Selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC, these student-athletes represent the finest basketball players across America. (NABC.org)
Three UAH Chargers were selected to the team, making us the only team in the country with three players on the All Region team. Josh Magette and Jaime Smith were named to the 1st Team All Region and Zane Campbell was named to the 2nd Team Region!
Coach Acuff was also named the South Region Coach of the Year!

The University of Alabama in Huntsville men’s basketball team will play in the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball South Regional championship for the second straight year as the top-seeded Chargers knocked off No. 4 seed Florida Tech 82-71 in front of a near-capacity crowd at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall on Sunday night. The top-seeded University of Alabama in Huntsville men’s basketball team achieved its main goal of the day on Saturday night and advanced to the NCAA South Region Tournament semifinals with a 69-61 victory over No. 8 seed Benedict on Saturday night at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. The NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Committee announced the field of 64 teams that will play for the 2012 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship on Sunday night, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville has been selected as the No. 1 seed and host institution for the South Regional Tournament for the second consecutive year.
The eight-team tournament will begin on Saturday, March 10, with the semifinals on Sunday, March 11. The championship game will be held on Tuesday, March 13. (Courtesy of UAHChargers.com)
Gulf South Conference Tournament Semifinals against West Florida
The Gulf South Conference announced its 2011-12 All-GSC Men’s Basketball Teams on Thursday night at the league’s banquet ahead of the GSC Tournament, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville was well represented as it landed three players on the squads while also boasting the Player of the Year as well as the Coach of the Year.
Head Coach Lennie Acuff was selected as the Coach of the Year while Josh Magette was the second straight Charger to earn Player of the Year honors. Joining Magette on the All-GSC First Team was Jaime Smith, and Zane Campbell rounded out the largest representation from any one school by landing on the All-GSC Second Team. For the first time in program history, the University of Alabama in Huntsville men’s basketball team has won the Gulf South Conference Tournament championship, defeating Christian Brothers by a 58-43 score at The Arena on the campus of Northwest Florida State College on Sunday afternoon. The Chargers leave the GSC Tournament with a 26-3 record and a 17-game winning streak – the longest active stretch of wins in the country.

-Below is a complete list of carriers for the 2012 GSC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament Championship contests. The women tipoff at 11:00 am (Central), followed by the men’s at approximately 1:30 pm.
Both Title Games will be shown live as scheduled by Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS), Mediacom, WHCQ-TV 8 in Cleveland, MS and ESPN3 and ESPN Full Court (blacked out in CSS markets).
CoxSports will show the Women’s and Men’s doubleheader via tape-delay on March 6 after the conclusion of the LSU-Tulane baseball game at approximately 9:30 pm. CoxSports will also show just the Men’s Title Game at 7:00 pm on March 8.
Jaime Smith received some fortuitous help from the backboard in nailing a 3-pointer with under two seconds left on the clock, and the No. 3 University of Alabama in Huntsville men’s basketball team defeated West Florida 87-84 en route to reaching the Gulf South Conference Tournament championship game.
